“AI for Good” is Huawei’s initiative to aid people with disabilities with their devices. Previously, they developed StorySign, which is a free app that translates children’s books into sign language. To allow the visually impaired detect the emotion of the person they’re talking to, they also created an AI app called Facing Emotions.
Currently, the telecommunications company is working on Track AI project to help detect vision problems in kids. In this post, your ortho k lenses specialist, Institute for Control of Eye Myopia in Children, discusses this new AI technology.
Preventing Visual Impairment in Children
Around 19 million children in the world are visually impaired. However, half of these cases can be prevented or treated. Detecting eye problems in young children, especially in babies can be a challenge since they can’t communicate yet.
Myopia or nearsightedness is the most common eye problem in children. This refractive error can affect how a child learns and performs in school. One effective way to treat the condition is through corneal reshaping therapy.
Together with Devices for an Integral Visual Examination (DIVE) Medical, Huawei aims to develop an easy-to-use, portable, and affordable device that non-trained professionals can use to detect vision disorders in young children.
The DIVE device measures eye movement, tracking children’s eyes. It has performance records of children with normal vision and those with impairment at different ages. AI analyzes this data, detecting the difference between kids with and without eye problems.
AI for Good
At the moment, medical institutions in Spain, Vietnam, Mexico, China and the UAE have started collecting data for the AI algorithm. AI is a technology that’s constantly learning and expanding. As its database grows, the more the machine becomes accurate, even when it comes to different races and cultural environments.
The company is working on bringing this AI technology to a HUAWEI P30 mobile phone to make eye tests portable and user-friendly. Huawei believes that the early detection of vision issues in children can improve the health and quality of life of children worldwide.
Regular eye doctor visits can help with the early detection of eye issues in children. Correct prescriptions for contact lenses or eyeglasses can correct many vision problems. Contact a myopia control specialist near you today.
