The Benefits of Eating Leafy Greens for Your Eyes

4 March, 2020 by Myopia Institute

Eating a balanced diet and a practicing a healthy lifestyle are essential in keeping your eyes healthy. Incorporating leafy greens into your daily meals can be beneficial to your vision.

Find out what leafy greens can do for your eye health from a local myopia control specialist.

Cataract Prevention

Over time, the protein in the lenses in your eyes deteriorate. Protein clumps or cataracts may build up on the surface of the lens. Cataracts can limit the light that passes to your eyes, which can affect different visual processes. Studies found that a healthy diet with the consumption of dark, leafy greens can prevent cataracts.

Watercress contains vitamins that are good for your eyes, including vitamin A, B6, B12, C, K, iron, calcium, magnesium, lutein and zeaxanthin. This leafy green can help prevent cataracts.

Reduce the Risk of Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration refers to the deterioration of the macula, or the retina’s focal point. This eye condition usually affects those who are over the age of 60. It doesn’t have early signs, so if you have a family history of macular degeneration, you should visit your eye doctor regularly.

Moreover, experts say that eating kale, spinach, and kale regularly can reduce the likelihood of developing this eye condition. These greens are rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, healthy antioxidants essential to your eyes. These antioxidants prevent free radicals in your eyes, which can kill healthy cells. Macular degeneration is an eye disease that spinach can help prevent.

Blue Light Protection

Lutein and zeaxanthin help filter blue rays in your eyes, which prevents retinal damage. It also helps lower your risk of having digital eye strain, a visual discomfort that results from the prolonged use of digital devices.

Keep track of your eye health by regularly visiting a local optometrist. To learn more about how to improve your vision, contact an eye specialist in your area.
